Andrew Garfield Wears Wig and Dress in Arcade Fire’s ‘We Exist’ [NSFW VIDEO]
If you’ve been wondering why Andrew Garfield decided to go for the shaved head look, we’ve got your answer. The British actor tried on a new role — and a new hairstyle — in Arcade Fire’s inspirational music video for ‘We Exist.’
The 30-year-old stars in the emotional video that begins with him tearfully shaving his head in a mirror. The opening scene segues into Andrew donning a woman’s blonde wig, before hesitantly and self-consciously trying on cut-off jean shorts and various cropped blouses.
In a violent and artistic visual representation of a gay man coming out to his father, Andrew is physically attacked at a bar by a bunch of burly men that presumably don’t accept his character’s self-expression and identity, much like his own father. He responds by breaking into a dance number packed with unspoken emotions.
The 'Amazing Spider-Man' actor's routine bizarrely leads him to stumbling onstage at Arcade Fire’s actual Coachella concert. He looks out to the crowd, dressed in a flowing white dress, and faces cheers, screams and bright lights. It’s a haunting end to an extremely moving song and video.
From the very title of the song, to Andrew’s stunning acting, to the powerful lyrics — such as “Daddy it’s fine, I’m used to them now / But tell me why they treat me like this? / Is it because we do it like this?” — everything about this work of art is a loud message for equality and the importance of human rights.
