Broome County is moving ahead to come up with a new deal for meal services for the County Jail, Meals on Wheels, senior centers and the Willow Point Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center.

The Legislature’s Committee of the Whole met May 3 following complaints about current vendor, Aramark.  Some nursing home staff and residents complained about the lack of choices for people with dietary issues, food arriving cold, late or not at all and some residents even skipping meals, losing weight.

The county put out a request for proposals earlier this year and officials are currently reviewing the responses.  Aramark is among those submitting an application in response to the RFP.

Aramark is under contract to provide the meal services for about the next year.

Before the private company took over the work, meals were prepared and distributed through Broome County’s Central Kitchen division.  That all changed under approval of a proposal to privatize the operations in an effort to save the County money.
