It can be a real struggle getting used to putting a car seat for your toddler into your car.  Recently, my daughter Katie arrived for a visit from North Carolina with my two little grandchildren in tow.  Having been removed from the car seat dilemma for many years now, I arrived at the airport ready to carry the kiddies back home to our house in safety.  To say that putting the car seat in my vehicle was difficult is a monument to understatement.  Katie persevered however and we managed to get it done.

Having grown up in the 1950's and 1960s, in "pre-car seat America," it is amazing what today young parents have to go through trying to figure these contraptions out.  I totally agree with their use, however, and because of them today's kids travel in the safest conditions possible.

In my day no car had car seats.  I remember in late 1950s when we had a new baby in the family, my mother wrapped the infant tightly in a blanket and placed the baby between her and my father on the shiny bench seat of our station wagon.  No strap, no belt.  Just a tightly wrapped blanket for safety.  Yes, we have come a long way.

So, if you struggle with understanding all the new bells and whistles that come with a new car seat, here is your chance to get some free help.

The Chenango County Sheriff's Department will hold a free child passenger safety seat inspection at their office on Wednesday July 28, 2021 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm.  Bring the child, car seat, vehicle the child will ride in and the owner’s manual for the vehicle.

This check event was made possible by a grant received by the NYS Governor's Traffic Safety Committee & NHTSA.
