Planning a tropical vacation? Well, there is one location you might want to rethink visiting for now.

The United States has issued a travel advisory for the Bahamas, warning New York residents to exercise caution due to a surge in violent crime, including armed robberies, burglaries, and sexual assaults, which can occur anywhere in the country, with particular concentration in Nassau and Freeport on New Providence and Grand Bahama islands.

In Nassau, the "Over the Hill" area, south of Shirley Street, has experienced lethal gang-related violence, and extra vigilance is advised, especially in vacation rental properties that lack private security.

Boating Dangers and Watercraft Risks

The United States government also warns that boating in the Bahamas is not well regulated, leading to injuries, fatalities, and reports of sexual assaults by jet ski operators.

As a precaution, U.S. government employees are prohibited from using jet skis rented from independent operators on certain islands. Furthermore, it is noted that some watercraft operators are unlicensed or uninsured and may ignore weather forecasts, posing additional risks.

Beach Safety Concerns and Firearms Restrictions

Beach safety is also a concern, with reports of sexual assaults, incidents with watercraft, and fatalities related to overestimating one's physical fitness or health. Additionally, possession of firearms and ammunition is strictly illegal, with severe penalties for violators, including arrest, jail time, and fines.
