Step Into Christmas Past: Upstate New York Dickens Festival Brings 1842 to Life
When snowflakes start to dance over Skaneateles Lake and the smell of roasted chestnuts fills the air, you know it’s time for one of Upstate New York’s most magical holiday traditions, Dickens Christmas.
Now in its 31st year, this festive event transforms the lakeside village into a living, breathing Victorian storybook. Beginning November 28 and running through Christmas Eve, visitors can stroll through the streets and find themselves face to face with Queen Victoria, Charles Dickens, and even Ebenezer Scrooge himself.
Skaneateles Transforms Into a Living Charles Dickens Story
As the story goes, Queen Victoria has arrived in town with none other than Charles Dickens, who’s been tasked with writing a Christmas tale that will change the world. Set in the year 1842, the entire village becomes the author’s muse as he gathers inspiration from the townsfolk from mischievous pickpockets to charming finishing school girls. It’s a fully immersive street theater experience where visitors aren’t just spectators; they’re part of the story.
New Queen Victoria Takes the Throne at Skaneateles’ Dickens Christmas
This year brings a new monarch to the cobblestone streets, Tarin Campanella will make her debut as Queen Victoria, succeeding Maria DeMitchell, who reigned for more than two decades. Campanella, once a matchstick girl in the festival during her college years, says she’s ready to bring warmth, wit, and regality to her new role. She’s been studying the queen’s mannerisms, refining her accent, and, most importantly, preparing to connect with the people who come to Skaneateles for that spark of Christmas joy.
Tiny Parades to Horse Drawn Rides, Dickens Christmas Delivers Old-Fashioned Fun
Opening day kicks off with the World’s Smallest Christmas Parade, a charming march from the Village Hall to the Hannum House porch, where the festival officially begins. Each weekend offers something new: sing-alongs at the gazebo during Midday Revels, interactive trunk shows with Dickens and his friend Washington Irving, and free roasted chestnuts courtesy of Tops Friendly Markets. Horse-drawn carriage rides, live music, and a snowman-building contest in Clift Park add to the fun, creating the perfect blend of nostalgia and celebration.
