The Most Popular Online Courses in New York Right Now
If you’ve ever thought about jumping into an online class, you’re not alone. In 2025, New Yorkers are logging on in record numbers to learn new skills and at the very top of the list is language learning.
Language Learning Takes the Lead
According to a new study from Class Central, language learning is the most popular area of online study in the United States, with nearly 262,000 average monthly searches. Spanish leads the way, followed by English, Japanese, and French.
For New Yorkers, this makes perfect sense. We live in one of the most culturally diverse states in the country, where being able to speak another language isn’t just helpful for travel, it’s a way to connect with neighbors, coworkers, and communities right here at home.
Programming Comes in Second
Not far behind is programming, with more than 120,000 monthly searches. Coding skills have become one of the most in demand tools for today’s workforce. Whether it’s app development, website design, or just understanding the tech shaping our lives, programming is no longer just for Silicon Valley.
Even if you’re not planning on becoming the next big software developer, adding coding to your skill set can open the door to new opportunities in just about every industry.
Business Skills Are Booming
In third place are business courses, with over 68,000 monthly searches. That probably won’t shock anyone who’s noticed the surge in side hustles and small business startups. New Yorkers are looking for ways to boost financial independence, from launching an online shop to expanding a freelance gig.
For many, online business classes are a way to level up without putting their careers on hold.
Data Is Driving Decisions
Coming in fourth, with over 57,000 monthly searches, are data courses. From health care to marketing, decisions are increasingly shaped by numbers. That’s why people are eager to learn data science, analytics, and visualization, the skills that make sense of all the information flying around us every day.
Math Stays Strong
In fifth place, math continues to be a solid choice for online learners, drawing more than 33,000 monthly searches. While it might not feel as exciting as coding or AI, math is the backbone of everything from college prep to managing personal finances.
AI Is On Everyone’s Radar
Artificial Intelligence sits at number six, with more than 31,000 monthly searches. From automation to machine learning, AI is transforming industries everywhere. Online learners are paying attention and looking for ways to understand the tools that are quickly becoming part of everyday life.
Accounting Skills in Demand
Accounting claims the seventh spot, pulling in over 30,000 searches a month. With so many New Yorkers launching small businesses and managing side income, understanding the basics of accounting isn’t just for big corporations anymore. It’s a practical life skill.
Marketing Knowledge Holds Steady
In eighth place is marketing, with more than 27,000 monthly searches. As more businesses move online, staying up to date on social media, content creation, and SEO is key. Marketing is always evolving, and online learning helps professionals keep up.
Creativity Has Its Place
Art makes a surprise appearance at number nine, with nearly 23,000 monthly searches. People are using online platforms to learn design, explore creativity, and even put together portfolios. And in stressful times, it’s no wonder so many turn to art as an outlet.

Excel Still Matters
Rounding out the top ten is Excel, with almost 20,000 monthly searches. It may not sound exciting, but it remains one of the most powerful tools in the workplace. From budgeting to business planning, mastering Excel can give you an edge no matter what field you’re in.
