On Thursday, January 21st, we celebrated "National Squirrel Appreciation Day." Most years, it is an underappreciated holiday but it felt different this year. I think it's because we are looking for any distraction from the things that are driving us nuts (get it...nuts) during our 2021 everyday life.

So now it's on to my favorite unappreciated holiday that celebrates another varmint...Groundhog Day. I've been fortunate enough in the past to celebrate this special holiday on the top of Gobbler's Knob

If you haven't made the trip to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania before. you need to. It begins at midnight on February 2nd with music, bright lights, and fire barrels. The Inner Circe is on hand and they'll answer any question that you may have.

Around 7:20 a.m., Punxsutawney Phil is rousted out of his hole and in "Groundhogese'" explains to the President of the Inner Circle whether he has seen his shadow or not. The celebration on the hill is done around 7:30 a.m. and everyone heads home to get some sleep of their own.

This year was to be the 134th anniversary for the Seer of Seers as he looks for his shadow. Like everything else, it's been canceled, so this year, we'll just have to do the next best thing.

The Prognosticator of all Prognosticators will be available virtually and you can get a personal message from the groundhog. It comes from the handler because he will have to translate the "Groundhogese" into English for you.

Groundhog Day may be overshadowed this year because of the coronavirus pandemic but let's hope that next year, we'll be able to take that glorious trip to the top of Gobbler's Knob.
