Seven-Year-Old ATV Driver Killed in Otsego County Crash

New York State Police are investigating an All Terrain Vehicle crash that has claimed the life of a child.

A 7-year-old boy operating the ATV was killed when it rolled over while on private property on Fisher Road in the Town of Decatur in Otsego County.

State Police in Oneonta were called to the scene of the crash shortly after 3 p.m. on Friday, August 27.

Authorities say the child, whose name is not being released, was airlifted to Albany Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

State Police say the crash remains under investigation.

According to the New York State Department of Health website: “Children under ten years should never be on an ATV – either as a driver or passenger. Young children lack the physical ability and mental skills to safely maneuver a motorized vehicle with multiple speeds and controls.”

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles ATV regulations state:

You do not need a driver license to operate an ATV in New York State, but certain restrictions apply to operators under age 16.

If you are age 10 through age 15, you may operate an ATV only:

• Under adult supervision; or,
• Without adult supervision on lands owned or leased by your parent or guardian; or,
• On any lands where ATV use is permitted, without adult supervision, if you have completed an ATV safety training course approved by the DMV. You should carry your course completion certificate when operating any ATV.

If you are under age 10, you may operate an ATV only:

• Under adult supervision; or,
• Without adult supervision on lands owned or leased by your parent or guardian.

Adult Supervision means being accompanied by a person at least 18 years of age, or a person 16 or 17 years of age who holds an ATV safety course completion certificate from an approved safety course provider.
