Summer camp season is right around the corner and after two years of cancelations due to the coronavirus pandemic, families are excited to get back to some semblance of "normal" and that means once again, sending kids to camp.

We are lucky to have quite a few summer camps available between Delaware and Otsego County: featuring everything from a traditional type like you get at 4-H Camp Shankitunk in Delhi to sports camps, to art and even theater camps.

There's one summer program for kids that's been a staple part of the Greater Oneonta community for years which is struggling to get the staff necessary to operate according to The Daily Star and that's the Oneonta YMCA summer program that is open to the public. During the last two years, the Oneonta YMCA was only able to operate a summer program that was greatly reduced from previous years because of COVID-19 state-mandated regulations along with licensing and permit regulations. Before COVID, the Oneonta YMCA was able to operate camp for 6 weeks out of the summer (in July and August). Some years it was all day and other years the camps were split into morning and afternoon programs.

It's not known yet what is going to happen when it comes to Oneonta summer YMCA programs for kids. The Oneonta YMCA is planning on getting back to offering a more flexible summer program to area families but it remains to be seen since it all hinges on staffing and we all know the staffing shortages that have been going on across the country which are still happening. The YMCA's plan for this summer is to offer camp for four or five mornings a week for three hours which will take place at the old Center Street School and the Oneonta YMCA. The Y needs to hire camp counselors 18 or older with a few employees 16 to 17 years of age. Those interested in a summer job at the Oneonta Family YMCA can apply here.
