Unadilla Celebrates Flag Day With A Parade For The 71st Straight Year

On June 14th, 1777, the Continental Congress in Philadelphia adopted the Stars and Stripes as the national flag. It was officially established by a Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30th, 1916.

It wasn't until August 3rd, 1949 that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th as National Flag Day. Fast forward to 2022 and the Unadilla Fire Department will be holding its 71st consecutive Flag Day Parade.

It was touch and go for a little while last year when it was feared that they might not be able to have the parade because of the pandemic. They were able to keep the streak going and according to to1st Assistant Chief from the Unadilla Fire Department, Jeff Jones, it's the longest continuous Flag Day Parade in the United States.

Every year on Flag Day, no matter the day of the week, the parade begins at 7 p.m. on 265 Main Street in Unadilla. I was able to attend last year and it blew me away. There were fire trucks for as far as the eye could see.

Classic cars, antique tractors, army trucks, and politicians in a skating shoe vehicle will be there. Boy and girl scouts, little league baseball, softball, and tee-ball players along with young ladies on horses. These are just some of the things that you can see at the Unadilla Flag Day Parade.
