Cuomo Offers More Details About Upstate Reopening Plans
Efforts to develop a strategy to "un-pause" New York state on a regional basis are moving forward.
Governor Andrew Cuomo provided additional information about the process during a news briefing at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse Tuesday.
Cuomo announced 335 people died due to the coronavirus in New York state on Monday, bringing the death toll to 17,638.
The governor announced the creation of the New York Forward Reopening Advisory Board to help establish the guidelines to gradually reopen the state's economy.
Cuomo said "there's no such thing as a reopening plan" that has existed to get an economy going again following a pandemic.
The governor said regions of New York will need to coordinate plans with the state and federal governments to keep people safe and to allow the economy to reopen in phases.
The current state "pause" executive order runs through May 15.
Cuomo said regional reopening actions will be contingent on 14 days of reduced COVID-19 hospitalization.
The governor also indicated it would appear unlikely the state fair could safely be held this year. He said events that would draw a significant number of people from other regions can't be held until there's been a statewide reopening of the economy.
