Foodie Friday ‘Drool Drops’ Dog Treat Recipe

I’ve had requests from people wanting to be able to make treats for their pets since they don’t want to go to the store.  You may have the ingredients on hand but you can often find substitutions for some items or leave some things out.

These soft treats can be broken apart and used as training bait, are perfect for smaller dogs and are easy for dogs with teeth issues, like older dogs, to chew.

You can take this dough, roll it out, cut it in strips and spread smooth peanut butter in the middle, roll it up and slice it into logs before baking for a whole 'nother treat.

Drool Drops Soft Dog Treats

2 C. whole wheat flour (or all-purpose flour)

½ C. corn meal

1 tsp. baking soda

¼ C. vegetable shortening (you can substitute margarine or butter but the shortening is less rich <and cheaper>)

2 eggs

1/3 C. beef broth (or any other stock or soup for flavor)

¼ C. honey

2 Tbl. Molasses (this helps to make the treats soft, but you can try leaving it out)

Preheat oven to 375. Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper or spray with cooking spray. Mix flour, soda and corn meal in a medium or large mixing bowl. Cut in shortening. Beat eggs in a separate bowl.  Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add eggs. Mix lightly with a fork.  Stir in honey and molasses.  Heat the beef broth in the microwave for about 20 seconds until a little warmer than room temperature. The warm broth will help loosen up the sticky honey and molasses.* Mix at first with a spoon until the dough starts to come together.  Finish incorporating all the ingredients using your hands until well combined and dough can be shaped into a ball. Pinch off portions of dough about the size of a small walnut and roll into a ball between the palms of your hands.  On cookie sheet, flatten into rounds and mark an X in the middle of each treat with a knife. Bake 10 to 20 minutes until lightly puffed and the bottoms are brown.

* Here’s a tip: If you use the same measuring cup you used for the shortening to measure the honey, you’ll be able to scrape the honey out easily. Another way to do it is to spray your measuring cup with a little cooking spray.
