Cancer survivors are invited to participate in this year’s Relay For Life of Delaware County on April 27. The event will take place at the Delaware County Fairgrounds in Walton from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and survivors will take part in the opening ceremony at noon.

Cancer survivors are invited to celebrate their triumph over cancer by participating in an inspirational “Survivors’ Lap” to open Relay For Life. After the lap, survivors will be able to honor their caregivers by walking a lap with them. Following the opening ceremony, survivors who register will be treated to a luncheon, which will be held inside the 4-H Youth Building. This year’s meal will be provided by students in the SUNY Delhi culinary program. Each survivor also receives a T-shirt or a baseball cap.

Relay For Life is an event to honor the survivors, and to pay tribute to those who have lost their battles with cancer. It is an opportunity for survivors to unite and join in the American Cancer Society’s goal to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

This year’s goal is to have 50 survivors register for the event. Approximately 200 invitations were mailed to cancer survivors throughout Delaware County. Survivors who did not receive an invitation register via the website www.relayforlife.org/delawarecountyny or call Vicky Klukkert before 8:30 p.m. at 607-746-2454 by Thursday, April 11, to ensure enough food and T-shirts/caps are available. Survivors can also register the day of Relay, beginning at 11 a.m.

People are invited to honor survivors or those who have succumbed to the disease by purchasing luminaries, which will be lit about 8 p.m. during a moving luminary ceremony. You can purchase a luminary on the website, from a Relay For Life team member or during the event up until 5 p.m.

This year’s theme is “Cruisin’ for a Cure” and classic car owners are invited to bring their cars for a car show beginning at 11 a.m. Registration is $10 and benefits the American Cancer Society. Trophies will be awarded, including spectator and student picks. The livestock barn will be available to vendors to set up. For forms, visit www.facebook.com/delawarecountyrelay.
